Blindness is the lack of sight and inability to see. Many causes of blindess include accidents, diabetes, or certain eye diseases. One type of blindess is CVI. CVI which is cerebral visual impairment and the leading cause of modern day blindess in children, it is a brain-baised disorder. A child with CVI usually has trouble processing what their eyes are seeing. One example may be that they see the world as a mass of color.
In school, students who are blind will have trouble taking written tests, because they can not see the questions. Also, they will not be able to see slideshows on the board, white boards, textbooks, and other assignments.
If you are reading a picture book, then explain what is happening in the pictures.
If you are sharing a slideshow with your class, read everything that is on the slides.
Don’t use gestures or point to your blind student. Instead, use their name.
Ask your student the questions on tests and have them say the answer.
Have your student listen to audiobooks or books with braille
Have your child learn the Braille Alphabet, so they can read books with braille.
2. When your child is using a computer, have them use a keyboard braille overlay for typing. Additionally, turn on the screen reader.
3. It is important to teach your blind child responsibility. They can still help around the house. They might find it difficult to do some tasks, but they can do parts of them. For example, they can open the trash can, or turn on the water. They need to learn how to do these chores for the future.
